Flick picks: ‘Detroit’ is a tough, potentially divisive history lesson about police brutality

Kathryn Bigelow’s latest historical excavation “Detroit” is a tough, tough viewing experience. A searing indictment of police brutality today through the lens of an incident during that city’s 1967 riots, the film focuses on true events that took place at the Algiers Motel on the night of July 25, during which three black men were killed and several more people were brutally beaten.
