Southern Season sold at auction, new buyer plans to close more stores

Southern Season, the 41-year-old Chapel Hill-based gourmet food giant, has been sold. Delaware-based kitchen retailer Calvert Retail has bid $3.5 million – which replaces the only other known bid by Raleigh-based The Focus Properties. Calvert announced Friday that said it has "acquired specific assets of North Carolina-based Southern Season stores." The acquisition includes all of Southern Season's intellectual property, its trade names and website, as well as the Chapel Hill flagship store.…
